The Hub Radio Secures Funding and Broadcast Premises

Big Lottery Fund

Since receiving a full time FM community radio licence from Ofcom in 2012, work has stepped up a gear to bring The Hub Radio to air. Cornwall’s newest hyper-local radio station will begin broadcasting in the second quarter of 2014 to the 15 parishes of Cuby, Gerrans, Grampound with Creed, Ladock, Mevagissey, Philleigh, Probus, Ruanlanihorne, St. Ewe, St. Goran, St. Just-In-Roseland, St. Michael Caerhays, St. Michael Penkevil, Tregony and Veryan.

The management committee are now pleased to announce that The Hub Radio has been awarded lottery funding from the Big Lottery ‘Awards for All’ scheme. The Big Lottery Fund distributes half of the National Lottery good cause funding across the UK. The Fund aims to enable others to make real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need.

Pete Appleyard, one of the members of the management committee said “This award will enable us to develop our business plan and fundraising strategy which should in turn help us raise both the capital and year 1 funding we need to run The Hub Radio. We will also be able to purchase marketing materials and equipment to provide PA services to local village festivals and fetes around central South Cornwall this summer, which we aim to be at to spread the word about The Hub Radio launching next year.”

Having just received the good news that the project has been awarded lottery funding, We have now also signed a 5 year lease for studio premises.

The station will be based at the Tregony Industrial Estate on the road from Tregony Bridge to Ruan. This space will allow the construction of two good sized sound-proof studios with a large production facility. Construction work on the studios will start soon, once funds are in place.

Pete added “The Hub Radio will belong to everyone who lives and works in the area and will be a platform for them to have a voice that might otherwise go unheard. We intend to provide a radio service that meets the needs of the local community for news, information, discussion & debate and also entertainment through music, drama and comedy.

“We also want to raise awareness of issues that affect the area we live in, promote local services and community groups, and give people in the area, regardless of age or experience, the chance to gain qualifications in radio production leading to higher levels of employability.”

If you’d like to get involved with The Hub Radio, the team will shortly be calling all interested parties together for the first meeting at the new premises where they’ll discuss how you can help over the coming months. The Hub Radio has been awarded a full-time community radio licence to cover the Central South Cornwall area. Over the past few months we've been busy organising our transmitter and studio locations as well as seeking grant funding.

We're now able to let you in on great news regarding all three areas of the project. Things are about to step up a gear and we're very excited!

An open public meeting is being held in the committee room (upstairs) at Tregony Village Hall (TR2 5RW) on Sunday 13th January at 5pm (that's this Sunday!) for anyone who'd like to hear more about our progress and also for those who'd like to get involved at this early stage with all the leg-work that needs to be done in order to get The Hub Radio on-air. We had a good amount of interest and people signing up for working parties at the last meetings and we'd like to now put these into place and set the wheels in motion.

Visit to Neighbouring Community Station

The Source FM

Over the past weeks we've met many people with lots of interesting ideas and things are starting to move on well with The Hub.

The next stage is a trip to Falmouth with everyone who's signed up to get involved with The Hub, to visit The Source FM for a studio tour and to discuss how they started. This will be at 2pm on Saturday 23rd June. Unfortunately we cannot provide transport or pay for fuel so we will be asking people to car share and cover the cost of transport. We can arrange for anyone taking the St Mawes Ferry to be collected and dropped off on the Falmouth side.

After the visit we will have a short meeting to discuss what we have found out and future actions. You should expect to be on your way back by 5pm at the latest.

Open Public Meeting Announced

Public Meeting Announced Having recently been awarded a full-time community radio licence to cover the central South Cornwall area, The Hub is now calling on anybody who thinks they can help get the project off the ground.

If you've got any skills you think might be useful, the team would love to get you on board.

An open public meeting is being held at Tregony Village Hall on Wednesday 13th June at 7pm for everyone who'd like to get involved (with another meeting being held at 4pm on Sunday 17th June for anyone who can't make the first) The team behind the project will go through progress to date, the future vision and what we need to do to get there.

THE HUB GRANTED FM COMMUNITY RADIO LICENCE

The Hub granted FM Community Radio Licence

Cornwall’s newest community radio station has just got the go-ahead to broadcast to the central South Cornwall area - just a year after it was a far-off dream. Ofcom, the radio regulator, has just granted The Hub a full-time FM community radio licence.

Mark David Hatwood, acting Chair, said: “Thanks to the community funds and support of Cllrs Julian German and Bob Egerton and the hard work of Pete Appleyard, Gary Watts and Gareth Hill we’re thrilled to get the news, but this is only stage one. There’s been a huge amount of work to get where we are today, now we need to roll our sleeves up and get on with even more hard work!”

Community radio stations are part of the growing trend to ‘hyper-local’ information – providing a voice right down to street level.

The Hub will broadcast to the 15 parishes of Cuby, Gerrans, Grampound with Creed, Ladock, Mevagissey, Philleigh, Probus, Ruanlanihorne, St. Ewe, St. Goran, St. Just-In-Roseland, St. Michael Caerhays, St. Michael Penkevil, Tregony and Veryan.

But it will be more than a radio station for them, Mark added;

“The Hub will belong to all who live and work in the area and will be a platform for them to have a voice that might otherwise go unheard. We intend to provide a radio service that meets the needs of the local community for news, information, discussion & debate and also entertainment through music, drama and comedy. Working closely with existing organizations like Parish Magazines and Roseland-Online.co.uk, we plan to keep the locale informed and entertained.

But to develop The Hub plans and bring everything to air, the steering group needs to bring more people on board. They have two years to develop fully-equipped studios with funding in place and volunteers trained in radio presentation techniques.

A meeting will be called very shortly (date and time will be confirmed on our website) for anyone interested in helping to get The Hub up-and-running. This meeting will discuss funding, premises, staffing, logistics and look for volunteers.

“The main areas of expertise we're looking for help with are: financing & accounting, business management, law, fundraising & grant applications, marketing and community development, though anyone with enthusiasm and a passion for radio will be welcome.”
